Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul . Speaking Passage（第六节CCTV希望之星英语风采大赛地方赛区复赛演讲稿） Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I’m to talk about “calm”. Here is a story. Once a little girl in Spain was kidnapped and her mother received a threatening call from the bandits, blackmailing a large sum of ransom. What could the poor mother do? She stayed calm. As she was clear that the child’s eyes were bright enough to reflect the bandits, she called them back after informing the police and said: “I won’t pay any money unless I receive a photo of my daughter!” The bandits took a picture of the girl and sent it to the mother just as expected. So the well-prepared police were able to take skillful analysis of the photo and recognized the bandits in the child’s eyes successfully. Soon the bandits were caught alive. It was great of the young mother to do so, wasn’t it? She was cool-headed, composed and was able to face sudden danger calmly. She socialized with the bandits shrewdly, seized initiative in the fight with them and head off disaster in the end. So I intend to eulogize calm. What is calm? It’s just like the young mother, facing challenge calmly.There is another true story. A few years ago, when Horrified who “had been old” decided to challenge the vigorous “king of boxing” Tyson, there used to be unnumbered people said—either secretly or publicly—that he would fall down under Tyson’s violent fists. But Horrified never vacillated; instead he got ready calmly and stepped onto the stage calmly. At last, Tyson fell down after a soul-stirring fight and it was Horrified who was still standing calmly on the stage. At the moment of victory, Horrified said calmly: “I knew that you had abandoned me, but the God hadn’t.” Yes, it was a sentence perfect enough to be written on the golden title page of “World’s Boxing History”. Think it over, what the so-called “God” actually is? Isn’t it ourselves? In other words, even if someone in the world abandons you, but you don’t leave yourself in the cold wind, and just stand steadily and calmly, you can still get hope and reach glory. Yes, calm is not to abandon yourself, but a kind of confidence. Calm is not to despise yourself, but a kind of heroism. Calm is not to be overcautious and indecisive, but a kind of steadfastness. Calm is not to be alarmed and nervous, but a kind of tranquility. Calm is dawn, it’s able to lift your dream straight high into the sky.
