This plot that Jim heard the conversation between pirates is a turning point of the story, it lays the groundwork for Jim slipped into the place beyond pirates and captured the ship. That may allow pirates to take advantage of the treasure and do something wrong such as gambling, drinking and squandering food. In the meanwhile, we can feel the temptation of money. 彼得失去了他的影子一天早上，达林太太在卧室的地板上发现了一些树叶。

在吉姆边，有沉着冷静的利夫西医生，正直高尚的乡绅屈利劳尼，细心机敏的船长斯摩利特还有阴险狡诈却精明过人的海盗西尔弗。
在不断的冒险历程中，吉姆吸收了身边大人们的一些品质，到后来他身上体现出来的沉稳老练，丝毫不逊色于他的大人伙伴们，他甚至还吸收了西尔弗善于分析、思维缜密的特点。
所以他敢于偷偷地溜上海盗的小船；当他感到船上的朋友们不理他的时候，他一冲动就跟海盗们上了岸；而在岸上与海盗对峙的时候，他再一次离开大伙儿，历尽艰辛夺回了大船。
通过磨难和历险，在故事结束之时，吉姆的成熟与开篇时候的懵懂已经截然不同。
吉姆形象的塑造，在于作者对英雄主义理想的呼唤，不一定是呼唤古代神话中阿喀琉斯式的那种英雄，而是那种在平凡时代能够勇于探索未知世界，在巨大危险威胁下，能够克服怯懦、勇敢无畏的英雄主义精神。

约翰·西尔弗西尔弗是小说中是一个比较成功的形象。
他性格复杂，既有严重的道德缺陷，也有还未泯灭的良心。
他诡计多端、老奸巨猾。
他的真实身份就是“船长”日夜为之胆战心惊的“独腿水手”。
他假扮成船上的厨师，取得了医生、乡绅等人的信任，同时笼络其他水手进行叛变。
在形势急转直下的时候，他为自已留一条后路，出面保护吉姆，不让其他海盗加害于他。
最后西尔弗抛弃了发狂的海盗们，加入了吉姆的阵营，帮他们打败了叛徒。
在返航途中，他显然害怕回国后受到惩罚，偷了一笔钱逃之天天。
西尔弗从个人利益出发，在两个阵营中不断摇摆，前后五次倒戈，这个人物的善与恶、优点与缺点随着他的生活轨迹此起彼伏，代表了一种极端个人主义意识。
