系列中一共出现4个Snake：SolidSnake、Liquid Snake、Solidus Snake以及Naked Snake。
MSX主机上的MG、MG2以及PS系列上的MGS、MGS2和MGS4的主角是Solid Snake（固体蛇、索利德斯内克），4代中也叫Old Snake（老蛇）。
这几代的Snake都是一个人，也是通常所说的Snake或蛇叔。
而MGS3以及和平行者，原爆点和幻痛中的主角是Naked Snake（裸蛇），也就是日后的Big Boss，独眼是他的特征（MGS3中被左轮山猫打伤了右眼）之前的3条蛇（Solid、Liquid、Solidus）都是Naked Snake，也就是Big Boss的克隆体。

The Boss是MGS3的最终Boss，她是Big Boss的恩师，是一名非常出色的军人，二战时的战斗英雄，最终在冷战却沦为了政治的牺牲品。

solid是个无法生育的短命克隆人；雷电本来娶了女神却被改造成人造人，女神也改嫁自己上司（虽然后面说只是个幌子，还喜当爹……）；梅丽尔竟然是叔叔趁爸爸不在NTR了妈妈的产物；Otacon这个宅男更惨，第一部先是尿了裤子，然后喜欢的美女“雪狼”被solid干死了，自己还要跟着solid混，一混就是全系列。
第二部回忆里自己跟后妈有染，导致父亲自杀，而且后妹也喜欢自己，不过刚表白，后妹就死了。
第四部刚跟美女Naomi在飞机来了一发，Naomi又死了。
也是，一生都在当间谍，至死都在不停的演戏，不变的是对bigboss的追随。
