在《复仇》、《复仇（其二）》两篇散文诗中，鲁迅复仇的矛头却直指百姓——那些他一心想唤醒、想拯救的人。
鲁迅的这种“复仇”精神，是对愚昧百姓“怒其不争”的体现，也是为了“引起疗救的注意”。
《复仇》鲁迅在《野草》的英文译本的译序中说：“因为憎恶社会上旁观者之多，作《复仇》。
”所谓的“旁观者”及那种看客心态，在他的几个小说中屡有描摹，但这文章里面的被看者，倒是有些特别。
“他们俩裸着全身，捏着利刃，对立于广漠的旷野之上。
”“裸着全身”，是指向爱，指向全身心的偎倚、接吻、拥抱；“捏着利刃”，当然是指向杀戮，是恨的 体现。
他们复仇的方式非常奇特：既不拥抱也不杀戮，即实现了复仇。
看客们由失望到绝望，终于“面面相觑，慢慢走散”，这时，干枯而立于旷野的男女则反过来 赏鉴路人的干枯与死亡，而且因为生命的飞扬而大喜。
