1860年10月6日，英法联军绕经北京城东北郊直扑圆明园，当时，僧格林沁、瑞麟残部在城北一带稍事抵抗，即行逃散。

至晚7时，法侵略军攻占了圆明园。
管园大臣文丰投福海而死。
10月7日，英法侵华头目闯进圆明园后，立即“协派英法委员各三人合议分派园内之珍物。
”法军司令孟托邦当天即函告法外务大臣：“予命法国委员注意，先取在艺术及考古上最有价值之物品。
