他的戏剧、诗作、小说留给后人许多惯用语，如“活得快乐，就是最好的报复”。

王尔德的生平故事
奥斯卡·芬格尔·奥弗拉赫蒂·威利斯·王尔德，英国十九世纪末唯美主义代表人物，1854-1900. 出生于爱尔兰首府都柏林，父亲威廉·王尔德是当地著名眼耳科医生，另在历史文化研究上也取得建树。
母亲为诗人和翻译家，经常主持伦敦诗歌戏剧沙龙。
王尔德在十岁(1864)时因人口统计上的贡献被维多利亚女王册封为爵士。
王尔德早年在都柏林三一学院研习古典名著，因希腊文成绩优秀获得伯克利金质奖章，后获得奖学金前往牛津大学马格达兰学院就读，并因诗作《拉凡纳》获得纽迪盖特奖，1878年以优等考试成绩从牛津毕业。
在牛津和伦敦，王尔德衣着考究甚至出格，举止得体，极力张扬唯美主义，“为艺术而艺术”，声明艺术应当远离当代社会和日常生活。
王尔德很快打入英国上流社交圈，在1880年，他和画家弗兰克·迈尔斯从索尔兹伯里街13号的泰晤士堂搬到泰特街的一处豪宅，取名为济慈堂，社交名流云集其中，王尔德声望日隆。
泰特街上除了济慈堂，还住着英国唯美主义运动的中坚人物——画家詹姆斯·惠斯勒(1834-1903). 1881年4月，由吉尔伯特作词苏利文作曲的歌剧《佩兴斯》为唯美派作了有效的宣传。
同年9月，该剧在美国纽约推出，王尔德也被邀请到美国作了历时一年的商业巡回演讲，为英国唯美主义现身说法。
1884年王尔德与康斯坦斯·洛伊德结婚，并生育两子。
1886年王尔德被罗伯特·罗斯引入同性恋地下世界。
1891年王尔德结识了年轻的阿尔弗雷德·道格拉斯勋爵，两人开始了难以言明的恋情。
1895年2月28日，王尔德收到道格拉斯的父亲昆斯伯里侯爵的信件，写道：致奥斯卡·王尔德，妆模作样的男好色者”。
王尔德以诽谤罪控告昆斯伯里，4月初，昆斯伯里无罪释放，王尔德因有伤风化行为被捕，并被判两年徒刑。
