正如伯爵自己所说，他如此所做已是非常的仁慈，而如今要追求自己的幸福时却是法律不允许的。自己的仁慈之举已成为自己幸福的障碍。这对矛盾就是在社会角度的人道主义与自身的角度自我的幸福间的矛盾。这种矛盾自古有之。从来都不曾消失过，微观来讲是一种人道主义与自身幸福的追求间在某一种特定环境中所存在的矛盾。而宏观来讲则是一种社会环境与自身选择，一种社会道德和个人道德间存在的冲突。而这点也正是简爱所要揭露的主题，只是在此处用伯爵所面临的选择来揭露，则显得更为深刻点。
人，作为社会的群体动物，从有智慧存在起，就一直在自身的本性人性和社会所赋予的社会道德的人性之间徘徊。从两种的对抗则常常前者屈服于后者。故历史上常看到，在社会道得以继承的同时也是个人本性所遭受的悲剧。而简爱最后的结尾虽然是靠一场大火这一因素来冲淡了社会道德的束缚从而实现个人本性的胜利但在那个时代的作者来看这已是对社会的一种最大的反抗了，并且是以胜利结束。

在我的心目中，《简·爱》是一部完美而伟大的着作，因为它使我懂得了什么是善恶美丑，学会了怎样做人，而书中的主人公简·爱就是我学习的榜样，她的聪明、善良、坚强、有主见，是最令人敬佩的。简·爱的一生悲欢离合。她遭遇了许多挫折和坎坷，可以说是不幸的，但是她却从不向命运低头，任何困难在她面前都会感到恐惧。
简·爱从小被她的舅妈收养，而且她舅舅的儿子约翰里德还是一个又胖又大、蛮横无理、猪狗不如的禽兽。他经常无缘无故地打骂简·爱，但她的舅妈不但不去制止，反而支持她野蛮的儿子。然而，简·爱是一个顽强的、决不向恶势力低头的人。她再也忍受不了了，她对约翰的恨压倒了对他的畏惧，不顾一切地跟他对打起来。当然，结果可想而知，简·爱受到了她舅妈的惩罚。但她的这次举动足以令约翰胆颤心惊。

说实话，在我读过的书中，大多在脑海中不会留下太多的痕迹。但是，有这样一本书，只要一打开，便会摆脱了书那种单纯的形式，使之融入到你的'生命，恰似一朵美丽的花，即使凋谢了，记忆中仍久久的萦绕着它的芬芳。《简爱》就是这样一朵美丽的花。至少我是这样认为的。
第一次读《简爱》，首先吸引我的是它的名字。我之所以欣赏这个译本，是因为我始终觉得真爱、挚爱都是简单、单纯的，他不带有任何的私心杂念，《简爱》所宣扬的正是这样的爱，其精神性多于物质性，我特别欣赏男女主人公那种简简单单的爱恋，简和罗彻斯特除了默默深爱着对方，想拥有对方的灵魂外，没有太多地考虑，他们没有什么山盟海誓，也没有任何的甜言蜜语，或许我更愿意用朴实来形容里面的内容，来形容他们的感情，用一个最普通的比喻，一切的一切就好似一本白开水，就好似农夫山泉，让人感觉有点甜。
最吸引我的还是简那种始终追求个人的独立性的精神，哪怕是面对罗彻斯特如幻如神的爱情之箭，她仍旧如意的保持着自己追求平等独立的人格魅力，也许这种魅力使简这个人物深入人心，变得高大。可是现实中的她矮小、苍白，一点也不美。可以说是平凡的不能再平凡，普通得不能再普通，但她身上的那种气质，那种为争得自己尊严，争得人格平等的永不服输的精神是任何人都无法比拟的。
每当夜深人静的时候，我总会独自一人拿出《简爱》细细体会主人公之间的精神对白，沉浸在他富有诗意和哲理的抒情话语中：“上帝没有赐予我美丽和财富，但我们是平等的，就像我们的领会通过坟墓评定的站在上帝面前。”不知为什么，我特别喜欢这句话。
一直都幻想着自己能迎来一种爱，如简和罗彻斯特一样冲破年龄、财富和地位的障'碍，可以超越时空达到心灵感应。简，最终以坚强的品质，出众的才华赢得了幸福，更树立了自己高大的形象：自尊、自爱、自强。
