Long ago, in ancient times, a demon rebelled against his own kind for the sake of the human race. With his sword, he shut the portal to the demonic realm and sealed the evil entities off from our human world. But since he was a demon himself, his power was also trapped on the other side. I never believed it. I thought it was just a child's fairy tale. But I discovered that this so-called legend wasn't a myth at all. Sparda existed. How do I know? Well……I met the sons of Sparda--Both of them. Though the same blood of their father flowed through their veins, the two battled each other fiercely like arch enemies. It seemed as if they derived some sort of twisted pleasure from this brotherly fighting. But in the end……only one was left standing.蕾蒂：你听说过吗
来自斯巴达的传说。
在孩提时代，父亲告诉了我关于他的故事。
在很久以前的亘古时代，一个来自黑暗的恶魔因为人类的缘故背叛了自己的族群。
他举起和自己同名的巨剑，战胜并封印了恶魔。
然而，斯巴达本身也是一个恶魔，他的力量亦来自于黑暗。
这真是让人难以置信，我认为那只不过是一个美妙的童话。
然而后来，我发现这不仅仅是一个神话。
传说中的黑骑士斯巴达确有其人。
你问我怎么会知道
那是因为我遇见了他留下两个遗孤——一对双胞胎兄弟，哥哥维吉尔，还有弟弟但丁……他们继承了黑骑士的血脉，但是却如同最仇视的敌人一般争斗……这种兄弟相残似乎使他们获得了某种扭曲的快感。
到最后，只剩下了其中一人仍然独立于那儿……

斯巴达虽是魔界居民，却有高洁灵魂的魔，他拥有着与其它恶魔所没有的知性，与同胞们无怨仇，他为光的世界而拔剑，为保护弱小的人类而挥剑，他使用的剑也因此与主人同名。
漆黑的恶魔以强大力量对抗无数的魔物，即使是有实力的恶魔，在他面前就如同婴儿一般，当时没有眼疾的（汉译“战狼”）与其大战，也最终败于他手并被夺取一只眼。
这就是被人们尊敬的英雄，传奇的。
在以前，斯巴达是作为魔帝身边的忠实部下，正因为有他在旁协助，才能征服魔界。
对于当时憧憬他的恶魔来说(包括4代的Berial)，他是值得尊敬的存在，直到他离叛了同类们。
在魔界与人界仍有来往的时候，斯巴达曾经与一对恶魔兄弟约定好再决斗，不过斯巴达却未能赴约(出自动画版)。
被誉为边境之王的Bolverk与斯巴达大战，但败战。
发生的时间和地点不明。
最后斯巴达他过去从手中拯救到的世界仍不安定，为此用7个封印和自己强大的魔力关闭了魔界与人界的通道，之后守护着人界的和平。
在人界帮助人类，对抗在人界出没的魔物，4代的Fortuna也有他的踪迹。
在大约200年前，为了帮助守护一族，前往圣与魔的交融之岛上。
那时，封印了君临魔界大半，统治着所有魔物的金色恶魔ARGOSAX。
在那之后，他从魔界归来(2代露西亚篇终章有说)。
在人界的时光中，斯巴达与一位叫做Eva的人类女性(有一说是Eva为魔女)邂逅了，两人相爱坠入了爱河。
两人后来拥有了自己的孩子，是一对双胞胎，长子取名为(Vergil)次子取名为(Dante)。
不过后来，斯巴达失去了下落，有人认为他已经死亡，亦有人认为他只是失踪而已。
那之后，斯巴达再也没有出现。
在4代官方小说中，用阎魔刀破坏真Hell Gate后，有向提出他的疑惑。
既然父亲想要拯救人类，为什么不将魔界通道都破坏掉。
认为她知道答案，却选择不说清楚，因为她觉得生长于人类世界的是不会明白的。
她认为虽然选择拯救人类，魔界始终是他的故乡(她都一样)，她认为斯巴达始终没能断绝思乡之情。
另外但丁的武器“叛国”长剑和的武器“阎魔刀”都是斯巴达的遗物。
至于则是一部跟前四部鬼泣无关的游戏，可以理解为同名但是根本没有关联的另一个游戏。
在的故事情节里斯巴达不仅是魔王的左右手还是他的兄弟，最后强调一点，是另一款同名游戏，跟前4作没关系。

Though despite his brave efforts in our names, I fear some have forgotten the truth of that great sacrifice. If the event of that terrible were to reoccur, the fusing of both the demonic human realms, we, weak humans, would have no mean by which to oppose our submission. So I ask you to unit. And pray that even if such a dark time of chaos were to revisit us, our gracious Savior would shelter us from the storm. Let us pray. 2000年前……黑暗骑士斯巴达，背叛了他的恶魔同胞们，为了人类举起了他的剑。
