写作背景：1908年到1919年间，印度民族解放运动陷入低潮。
泰戈尔因与领导民族自治运动的国大党领袖们发生意见分歧，主要反映在农村问题、宗教教源问题以及斗争方式等问题上，因而退出运动，于1907年回到家乡圣地尼克坦从事民族教育和文艺创作。
这时期他出版了一系列诗歌、小说、剧本、歌曲、书信和杂文等著作。
