50年代的中国是一个很被别人瞧不起的国家，它没有伟大的科学成就，科技也得不到发展。
然而，一些留学知识分子的回国，使中国的命运得到了根本的转折，正是他们，挺直了中国的脊梁。
邓稼先就是这些留学生之一，当时他听说中国的科技状况，放弃了博士学位，决心回国为祖国贡献自己的一份力量，因为他知道：自己是中国的儿女，是炎黄的子孙
他回到中国，参加了原子弹的研制工作。
邓稼先不怕困难，经常带领工作人员到前线工作。

Land resources are dwindling because of water loss and soil erosion. Waste gases poison the air we breathe. The rivers and lakes are polluted by waste dumped in them from factories. It is probably no exaggeration to say that deterioration of the quality of the environment threatens the existence of mankind itself. Some people are of the opinion that the environmental problem is the price we have to pay for economic development. But I do not think that this argument is valid. After all, what is the point of economic growth if people’s lives are adversely alfected by worsening environmental pollution? There is plenty of evidence to show that sustainable development can be achieved by balancing economic growth with protection of the environment. The key to achieving this is to make people aware of the seriousness of the problem. 我曾听老人讲过这样一个故事：一天清早，一个园丁走进花园，竟然发现一大片的花草树木都奄奄一息，了无生息。
惊讶之余，他问榕树究竟发生了什么事，榕树说它不想活下去了，因为他无法像松树那样高大雄伟。
松树也沮丧地告诉园丁它想自我了断，因为他不像苹果树那样，能结出可口的果子。
但是一旁的苹果树也在抱怨，说他自己不能像槐树一样，浑身散发着芳香。
最后，园丁来到花园的一角，看到一株不起眼的小花，只见它生机盎然，一身绿意。

当然最好不是和别人比，因为天外有天，人外有人，和别人比较，你永远都成不了最好的一个，你也永远享受不到那种喜悦。
