1913年受聘到缅甸仰光华侨创办的中华学校任职。
两年的海外生活，他的思想受到一定影响，后来，他创作的不少作品都取材于此。
1915年12月，许地山回国，住在漳州大岸顶（今苍园街一带），后在漳州华英中学任教，1917年，他重回省立二师，并兼任附小主事（校长）。
1917年暑假，许地山以优异成绩考入燕京大学文学院，学会多种外文和方言。

许地山以落华生为笔名在刊物上发表了第一篇小说《命命鸟》，写了一对缅甸青年男女在封建礼教桎梏束缚下的爱情悲剧，在读者中引起强烈共鸣。
他从此开始了文学创作生涯。
1922年2月10日，许地山在《小说月报》上发表的短篇小说《缀网劳蛛》，为其早期的代表作。
小说反映了作者对吃人的封建礼教的愤懑并给予深刻批判，充分显示“五四”时期新文学反帝反封建的民主主义精神。
1922年8月，许地山与梁实秋、谢婉莹等到美国纽约的哥伦比亚大学研究院哲学系学习，1924年获文学硕士学位，并以“研究生”资格进入美国牛津大学曼斯菲尔学院研究宗教史、印度哲学、梵文、人类学及民俗学，两年后又获牛津大学研究院文学学士学位。
1921年到1926年是许地山创作的第一次高潮时期。

脍炙人口的《落花生》，以童年漳州生活为背景，明确主张做人要“像花生，因为它是有用的，不是伟大、好看的东西。

如《大藏经索引》、《道教思想与道教》、《中国道教史》（上卷）、《云笈七签校异》、《摩尼之二宗三际论》等，并着手编纂《道教辞典》。
其学术成就，学界有口皆碑。
抗战期间，许地山作为一名热爱祖国的左翼作家，奔走呼号，声讨日寇罪行。
然而，却受当时燕大任教务长司徒雷登的排挤而被解聘。
后避居香港，被聘为香港大学文学院主任教授。
许地山在港大任教期间，在改革教育、教学的同时，积极从事社会教育和文化活动。
他先后发起和组织了“香港新文学学会”、“中国文化协会”，并兼“广东丛书编印委员会”、“中国教育电影协会香港分会”常务理事。
他积极提倡改良中小学课程，建议教育当局创办香港中小学教师讨论会，并担任“香港中小学教员暑期讨论班”主任以及多所中小学校董。
对香港的文化教育事业做出不少贡献，受到各界人士好评，曾被选为香港中英文化协会主席。
1937年“七七”卢沟桥事变后，许地山更是义无反顾地投身抗日救亡运动。
他走出书斋，奔波于香港、九龙等地，在群众集会上发表演讲，帮助流亡青年补习文化课，还在报刊上发表了《七七感言》、《造成伟大民族底条件》等杂文，宣传抗战，反对投降。
在上海沦入日寇铁蹄之下时，著名作家郑振铎冒险收藏了3300多本明、清时代的刊本、抄本，打算转移到香港。
许地山得知后，为了中华民族的文化遗产不被敌人掠走，毅然答应帮助寄存许地山散文选集。
1938年3月，在汉口成立的中华全国文艺界抗敌协会，许地山和郭沫若、茅盾、巴金、夏衍等45人当选为理事。
当时大批文化人与青年学生流亡到香港，成立了“中华全国文艺界抗敌协会香港会员通讯处”，许地山任常务理事兼总务。
他写了长篇论文《国粹与国学》，在当时影响很大。
他还写了抗日小说《铁鱼的鳃》，作品通过主人公的不幸遭遇，表达了人民坚持抗战的意志和坚强的民族自尊心，受到文艺界的极大好评，被认为是“中国小说界不可多得的作品”。
许地山积劳成疾，导致心脏病逐渐严重。
天不假年，1941年8月4日下午2时，他心脏病再次复发，英年早逝，年仅49岁。
噩耗传出，第一个送来花圈的是宋庆龄。
梅兰芳、叶恭绰、郁达夫、徐悲鸿等许多知名人士送了花圈、挽联。
