故事的背景设定在遥远的未来世界，在一场战争中，当疏散儿童的一架飞机途经一座荒芜人烟的小岛时，遭到了袭击。
飞机坠毁了，大人们都在这次空难中不幸遇难，唯有这架飞机的孩子侥幸生存。
岛上的孩子中最突出的要算是十二岁的英国海军司令的儿子——拉尔夫，有着一头耀眼金发的他举止优雅、自信乐观。
