各家报纸对我的话夸大其词……我当时说，这些物体在上下波动，就像，啊，我看就像是漂泊在波浪汹涌的水面上的小船。
当我形容它们怎么飞行的时候，我说它们的飞行就像在水面上抛出一个碟子。
大多数报纸误解了我，并且错误地引用了我的话。
报纸说我说这些物体就像碟子一样。
而我是说，它们飞行的样子像碟子。
”阿诺德说他看见了一连串9个物体，其中一个发出了“可怕的蓝色闪光”。
阿诺德得出结论说，它们是一种新式的带翼飞机。
莫罗在采访报道最后总结说：“1947年的报道是一个历史性的错误。
阿诺德先生最初的描述被人们遗忘，而‘飞碟’却成为家喻户晓的词汇。
” 最早把飞碟和外星人联系起来的，是美国亚利桑那的气象学家麦克唐纳和美国西北大学的海克两人。
他们在20世纪60年代中期提出，有些飞碟是外星人造访地球所乘坐的宇宙飞船。
这个观点非常符合一般人爱幻想、爱猎奇的心理，立即成为新闻炒卖的热点，至今长盛不衰。
半个多世纪以来，媒体对UFO的报道已经超过100万次，现在光是美国，平均每天就有200多起关于飞碟或外星人的报道，其中有10起左右抓住外星人、或者与外星人直接接触的报道。
全世界就更多了。
这些报道都有非常具体的时间、地点、人物、事件经过，很多还有目击者的照片、录音和访谈的录像等等。
如果我们都相信这些报道，那么我们这个世界上外星人就太多了。
随着我们国家一步步融入世界大家庭，我国的飞碟和外星人报道也逐渐多了起来，市面上现在有的书籍，多半还是翻译或编译或改写外国人的，其中相当多的故事是外国报纸上4月1日“愚人节”所编的愚弄人的“新闻”，我们有的作者不知道是真愚蠢，还是真想发财，竟把它当做真事推销给我们。
多数科学家都承认，我们现在的文明还是一个很幼稚的文明，宇宙、地球、人类……还有很多很多的奥秘是我们所不了解的，这就是我们还需要科学研究和科学家的原因。
但是如果把我们不了解，不知道的事都归结到外星人头上，都用外星人来解释，那就离科学太远了。
在新闻自由的国家里，出于商业目的，什么“新闻”都是可以制造的。
飞碟和外星人常常被作为新闻题材进行炒作，半个多世纪以来，已经为各种报纸、电台、电视台、电影制片商、出版商创造了丰厚的利润，同时也把一个严肃的科学问题引导到了完全背离科学的歧路上。
截至目前为止，世界上还没有哪一个严肃的科研机构或者严肃的科学家(注意，不是带引号的“科学家”)声称发现了外星人或者外星人的宇宙飞船——飞碟。
当代最伟大的科学家和科普专家、美国天文学会行星科学学会主席、美国地球物理学会联合会行星研究会主席、美国科学促进协会行星协会主席、宇宙生物学的创始人卡尔·萨根，在著名的科普著作《魔鬼出没的世界》一书中专门讲到各种有关外星人和飞碟的报道的起源，他说：“我们经常被那些支离破碎、吹嘘得吓人的UFO(英文“不明飞行物”的缩写)的传说所缠绕，却很少听到编造者所受到的惩罚。
这并不难理解：什么能够推销更多的报纸和书籍?什么能够得到人们更多的关注?什么能使人感到更有趣?什么能使我们打发令人难熬的时间?是真的坠毁的外星飞船，还是那些经验丰富的骗子在骗那些傻瓜兜里的金钱?是威力无边的外星人在耍弄人类，还是有人根据人类的软弱和缺陷而总结出的看法?” 2001年03月10日，美国中情局首次大规模解密了859份秘密情报文件。
这些时间横跨1947年至1991年的秘密文件，内容五花八门，但其中最让人感兴趣的却是美国中情局从20世纪40年代末一直到现在对UFO现象的研究。
美国中情局对UFO现象50余年的研究结果证实：前期的UFO现象可能是前苏联政府为了制造美国社会混乱的阴谋；后期的UFO现象则是中情局绝密间谍飞机秘密实验导致的。
一句话，UFO迄今为止尚没有证据表明其存在! 2001年4月22日，英国《泰晤士报》报道，成立于1953年，鼎盛时期在全球各地拥有1500名会员，最多时每星期可以接到30份UFO目击报告的英国UFO(不明飞行物)部门，由于可供调查的线索日趋减少，日前已被宣布撤销。
这从另一方面说明，随着公众科技素质的提高，人们对UFO事件的关注越来越少，越来越多的人不再把它和外星人联系在一起，而是更多的用自然科学观点看待它。
