书中讲述了一任贵族青年——聂赫留朵夫，早年与一个女仆卡秋莎·玛丝洛娃发生了爱情。
聂赫留朵经历了军旅生涯后，精神上受到了污染，以至后来对卡秋莎·玛丝洛娃做出了无法弥补的丑恶行为，并抛弃了她，至使其堕落。
在多年后，两人以犯人和陪审员的身份重逢于法庭，做为陪审员的聂赫留朵夫良心深受谴责。
为了“赎罪”，他开始了对玛丝洛娃的“救助”。
在为此奔波的途中，聂赫留朵夫亲眼目睹了俄国农民的痛苦与贵族的压迫。
最后“救助”终末成功。
于是，聂赫留朵夫决定与卡秋莎·玛丝洛娃同赴西伯利亚流放地。
这时的他感到精神上受到了“复话”。
读过后，我仍不大理解，在片刻沉思后。

这又体现出了当时俄国政治的腐败。
