大学时代的他性格内向，一个人住一间宿舍，但是他却在自己的脑海中幻想出一个室友出来，他不但在自己的幻觉中和这位室友一直相处很好，而且这个幻觉一直伴随到他老，都无法抹去这个幻觉。

影片的前半部分的确如此。
影片主人公是一个风趣幽默且幸福的人，他用自己的幽默给他的妻子与儿子带来了快乐。
然而，影片的后半部却是讲述他们一家在纳粹集中营的生活。
主人公为了不让儿子幼小的心灵受到打击与伤害，用各种谎言善意地欺骗儿子，并告诉他：“一切只是个游戏，游戏结束后，我们便可以回家。
