楼下善良的默默无闻的老画家，得知后，决定帮助琼珊生活的希望，顾及也患上肺炎。
风雪交加的夜晚，最后常春藤叶即将落下之际，托着沉重的身躯，画下了梦想中的杰作——最后常春藤叶，帮助琼珊了活下去的希望，使得琼珊已脱离危险，而老画家终于承受不了病魔的打击，牺牲了。

他先是蹒跚而行，后来由于体力的减弱而不得不用四肢在地上爬行，最后只能下意识地用身子在地上蠕动着向前。
他与极度的饥饿、疲劳展开了难以想象的斗争。
凭着求生的本能和顽强的毅力，还有朦胧的希望，他最终于活了下来，在荒原上奏响了一曲热爱生命的凯歌。
这部小说给了我深刻的启示：为了达到一个人生的目标，就要同人生道路上的一切艰难险阻做殊死的搏斗。
这篇小说中的主人公在重重艰难险阻面前，想要放弃生命，选择死亡是再容易不过的事情，但他却没有甘心就死，他选择了抗争。
