十七岁时他在土耳其苏丹的支持下，率军打回瓦拉其亚并夺回政权，上台之后第一件事便是整肃异己，手段苛酷，又用各种严刑峻法对待罪犯整饬国家，最有名的就是穿刺刑。
因此他常被冠上帖普Tapes（施以木桩之刑之人）这个绰号。
弗拉德曾在多瑙河盼多次打败数倍于罗马尼亚军团耳其大军，解救自己的国家，成为罗马尼亚的民族英雄。
在与人交战的时候，善用『奇袭战法』、『彻底的杀戮和掠夺』。
真正令土耳其人感到恐惧的是1462年的战役，此战中弗拉德被盟友背叛退逃至首府，当土耳其大军追抵城下时，赫然见到开战时被俘虏的两万多名士兵，都被剥光了衣服示众，并被活活的穿插于长达一公里的木桩上环绕着城池。
从嘴部或臀部刺进的棒子四处林立，乌鸦和秃鹰不断的啄食这些死尸，使周围弥漫着浓烈的腐臭味，仍然向前直进的土耳其军队，目睹这令人毛骨悚然的情景，莫不为之心胆俱裂，了无战斗意志只得撤离。
